Project Details

Front and back lawns replaced with low-water use native plants, displaying seasonal color and interest. Japanese aesthetics of recently renovated home interiors brought out into landscape design. Homeowner, also an experienced docent for nearby open space preserve and active in garden upkeep, desired a primarily chaparral plant community for this hot, dry and sloped yard.

Highlights: Previous hardscape features retained, avoiding unnecessary construction debris and costs. Kept existing mature fruit trees continually visited and pollinated by bees and beneficial insects. Backyard re-circulating, stone fountain is magnet for many migrating birds throughout the year and provides water element for habitat gardening. Large trellis with a native grape now hides unwanted view into neighbor's backyard. Open, Asian-themed structure near front sidewalk mitigates disturbance from car and foot traffic on busy street, while focusing views beyond the house. Landscape at times buffeted by winds off the Bay and nibbled on by wandering groups of local deer, but appropriate plant selection prevents serious damage.

Irrigation: Drip throughout.

Native plants of interest: Deer Grass, California Sagebrush, Yarrow.
