Project Details

Replaced high water-use front and back lawns of this traditional home with native, drought tolerant plants. Retained large heritage oak and redwood trees that provide shade and mulch year round from natural leaf drop.

Highlights: Created sitting patios in front for small gatherings. New rock wall replaced old white picket fence, enabling passersby to view seasonal blossoms and leaf color. Tall arbored patio off family room provides comfortable backyard hangout space. Guesthouse trellis gives tenants extra privacy. Retained existing walkways and other serviceable hardscape, avoiding unnecessary construction costs and debris. Mounded beds with water-wise plants encircle a zero-water, pebbled labyrinth, replacing backyard lawn. Kitchen garden is easy access outside back door and low-water potted plants surround pool.

Irrigation: Drip and hand-watered areas.

Native plants of interest: California Buckwheat, Manzanita ground cover, California Fescue.
