Gallery 8
Project Details

Bold architecture on large site, coupled with homeowners' wish for low-water use and maintenance, drove design for this landscape topping a hot, sunny hill. Large heritage Valley and Coast Live Oak, Sycamore, and Coast Redwood trees provided existing 'bones' for the garden.

Highlights: Site planted with high percentage of native shrubs, perennials, grasses, and annuals. Reused and augmented remnants from previous dry creek to build new bed running further on the property, now showcasing outcropping with lights. New stone dry stack retaining wall in front replaced failing redwood structure. Existing hardscape features kept and refurbish as needed. Oversized tumbled bluestone stepping-stones complement backyard's generous size as do sculptures located throughout garden. Convenient herb containers placed on deck outside kitchen. Onsite tree leaf drop mulch suppresses weeds and keeps moisture in the soil. Gopher and tree cages are used as needed to mitigate problematic deer, rabbits, and gophers.

Irrigation: Subsurface drip for all planted areas.

Native plants of interest: Toyon, Wire Rush, Chalk Dudleya.

Landscape contractor (installation): Maximum Service Landscaping

Maintenance: Tao Landscaping
